Review: Lawless by Tracy Lorraine

I found peace in the last place I expected, but it was a mirage built on lies and unfulfilled promises.

I thought we somehow managed to find a way to co-exist in their little lair, but as usual I was wrong.

The second I felt settled, a corrupt Hawk turns up and flips everything I’ve come to know—and dare to trust— on its head.

Without a choice, I’m dragged out into the night by the man I vowed to obey— Maverick Murray.

Taken away from the protection of the man I loved to hate— Reid Harris.

Torn from the arms of the man who’s been my savior throughout this whole ordeal— Julian Dempsey.

They all had their reasons for needing me alive, but it was JD, the loyal best friend to the ruthless leader who taught me all about playing with fire.

The cocky playboy who likes to think himself a joker.

Just one smile from him and everything seems easier.

One touch and the rest of the world falls away.

The last thing I want to do is hurt him.

But I can’t forget that he’s a part of all this.

JD hurt me, even if it was with pleasure.

I never made a secret of where my loyalties lie.

And I have no choice but to leave him and Reid behind, as I clutch my husband’s hand, trusting that he knows best.

But what’s best for me, is the worst thing for JD. Because without me… his darkness just might pull him under.

This series gets better with each new book, so this one has been the best yet. It does end on one of the most brutal cliffhangers I’ve ever experienced though so the wait for the final book is going to be so long thanks to that ending, wow. This picks up exactly where we left off at the end of Relentless and I really thought I knew what was coming next but I was so wrong. One of the reasons I love this series is because the author continues to surprise me, which is rare. I can usually see the big twist from a mile away or know who the killer is before they’ve struck, but not here.

The action really ramped up with book three and it’s a wild ride in every possible way. Things get a lot worse before they get better and I can’t say much about what happens without giving everything away but I will say that I love these characters more with every book. Maverick is still my favorite of the guys, but JD has been a close second until now. Reid is turning out to be tough competition for both of them now though, which is relatively new. It took me most of the Merciless to warm up to him and although I did, he was still a distant third in Relentless, but he’s finally won me over completely.

Why choose is always hit or miss for me and even when I love the story, I usually struggle with the whole sharing thing. It’s just so at odds with the growly possessive alphas that I love but it works perfectly for me here. I think that’s probably because of Alana, since she’s such a unique character. And for as much as I love the guys, she’s my favorite character of all. We also get a lot more Aubrey in this book, as she plays a critical role. I hope we get more Harrow Creek with a women’s mafia after they take out Victor and his lackeys, that would be so much fun. I’d love to see Alana and Aubrey kicking ass in a more official capacity so fingers crossed for a spin-off. I’d like to thank the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
