Review: You’re So Basic by Angela Casella

It’s harder to run from love when you’re living with it.

Danny
I don’t want a new roommate.

I especially don’t want a new roommate who’s loud, mouthy, and so painfully hot I can’t keep my eyes off her.

Not that I’m interested in Mira Evans. She’s made it very clear that she agrees with the ex who famously broke up with me for being “too basic.”

But Mira breaks her ankle a few hours after moving in, and a couple of days later we’re stuck in an elevator…in the dark.

Secrets are revealed; lines are crossed. Now, this woman I wanted to avoid knows more about me than some of my best friends.

Mira
I’m a workaholic who can’t work, and staying cooped up inside is driving me crazy. Not to mention my no-good ex-boyfriend took Halloween a little too literally this year and paid a psychic to hex me.

I might not believe in magic, but I can’t deny I feel like I’ve been hexed. I have a broken ankle, and I’m falling for my roommate, a man who seems as adventurous as a pumpkin spice latte served up in a hand-knit sweater.

But getting stuck in that elevator with Danny proved to me there’s much more to him than there appears to be…and I’m not the only one who’s noticed.

Maybe cabin fever has amped up my paranoia, but I get the feeling we’re being watched.

Mira and Danny have met but they’re not fans of one another. She’s loud, colorful and always in motion, all things Danny works hard to avoid. He prefers quiet and serenity and being alone, so he dreads having someone in his space, especially a boisterous someone like her. Danny’s ex called him basic when she dumped him, which wasn’t a shock since he seemed kind of bland and boring in the earlier books.

But once we get to know him, he’s not at all what I expected. His ex would’ve known that if she’d really gotten to know him, but she was too self-involved to bother. Mira wasn’t thrilled with this set-up either and went into this fully expecting to clash with her new roomie. Running her bar is her life so already knows they’ll have opposite schedules that will underscore how different they are from one another. Things start off terribly when she breaks her ankle right away, but the two quickly bond, realizing they have a lot more in common than they realized. Good thing they’re hitting it off because things are already super complicated thanks to her loser ex, the psychic with the crayon-drawn sign and a hex that may or may not be for real.

But Danny has secrets and a past that prevents him from moving forward, so things aren’t all sunshine and unicorns. He’s a slave to the world’s worst boss, has to deal with his awful ex in order to sell the game he and Drew created, and is being followed by a weirdo who probably steals hamsters. He doesn’t know exactly what’s going on, but he knows Mira shouldn’t be with him right now since it may not be safe. Too bad she refuses to leave.

I wasn’t all that excited about Danny’s story but he’s probably my favorite guy of the group now. He was sweet, funny and full of surprises. Mira is easy to love also with her larger-than-life personality and fearless determination to take care of the people she loves. Their story was a lot of fun to read and set up the next book so well. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Shane and Ruthie. I’d like to thank the author and Literally Yours PR for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
