The Hate I Feel was originally released as a short story in the Hot Summer School Nights anthology. The story has been expanded and rewritten and it is now a full-length novel. This book is not a stand-alone romance and must be read in series order.
This was such a wild ride, and I couldn’t get enough of it. This book focuses on the two missing Anderson brothers, now known as Zayn and Roman. Kai and Rick have never stopped searching for their baby brothers so they’re ecstatic to finally find them, but they’re not exactly welcomed with open arms. Roman is open to getting to know the family, Zayn not so much. He’s been fed lies for years and believes his brothers had a part in the adoption, that the family as a whole just didn’t want them, but nothing could be further from the truth.
At first glance, this seems to be a personal thing between Zayn and Emery, but it doesn’t take long to realize the elite are still pulling the strings. They may no longer be in charge, but they did enough damage back then that it’s still carrying over into everyone’s present. One of the things that I loved about this book is how we get at least a little bit of everyone. It’s like a wonderfully long extended epilogue, showing us everyone’s lives: Abby and Kai are deliriously happy as he prepares for his first gallery show and she’s opening a dance studio. Jackson is an F1 driver now and Vanessa is his biggest fan. Xavier and Hunt are partners in every sense of the word since they’re married now and running a successful cybersecurity business of their own. Charlie and Demi are expecting their first baby. We don’t get much on Drew besides the obvious clues that he’s hiding something from his sister and their friends, but we’ll find out all the details soon enough in his book.
Despite their busy lives, they’re all still working together to stop the elite from hurting anyone else the way they’ve all been harmed and it’s still an uphill battle. They’ve had a lot of victories along the way, but the war isn’t over. Zayn and Emery are both unwilling participants and they both become collateral damage in their own way. He has a plan that involves using her to get what he wants, but it was designed with a loathing for Emery. Now that he’s actually gotten to know her, he sees her in a completely different light and he wants more, but she’s furious and wants nothing to do with him.
It was a lot of fun returning to this world for an update and I loved everything about it. The four remaining Anderson brothers beg for a spinoff series of their own, so I hope we get their stories soon, especially Joaquin. Zayn and Emery are young and dumb but fighting to survive and I enjoyed seeing them butt heads. Their story has a bit of everything with a little suspense, a lot of heat and even a brief love triangle of sorts. I can’t recommend it enough and can’t wait for Drew’s story, which I really hope includes Shonda. I’d like to thank the author and Literally Yours PR for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
