Burn, Re-Write, Re-Read

This is a play on F*ck, Marry, Kill where you choose 3 books at random and decide accordingly. This was a popular book tag a while back but I can’t remember where I saw it so I’m winging it here. I used the random sort option on Goodreads to see my shelf, then used the first 3 books in the results. I enjoyed all of these books, so this wasn’t easy but it was lots of fun, which is why I did 3 rounds.

Round 1

Burn: The Marriage Auction – I actually really enjoyed this book a lot but it had the misfortune of being randomly presented along with two books that I absolutely adore. There’s nothing bad about it at all, it’s just the only one in the group I could bear to part with, even hypothetically.

Re-Write: Sweet Retribution – I’ve read this book multiple times and never once, at any point in the story, saw a need to revise anything. But the pace is punishing, everything about it is super intense and it’s one of those books you just can’t put down. I wouldn’t change much, but maybe I’d insert a few jokes here and there to break up the tension.

Re-Read: The Bet – This book is pretty darn perfect all around. The characters are real and fun, the plot is kind of silly in the best possible way and their chemistry is off the charts. This story made me laugh out loud more than once but still gives us a lovely romance and HEA.

Round 2

Burn: A Seal’s Oath – This one was easy because the story doesn’t make sense and just got entirely too crazy for me. There are things I really liked about it and was excited to see that it was a series, at first. But the story quickly goes completely off the rails and became almost more of a fantasy trope, it’s very strange.

Re-Write: The Cheat Sheet – I enjoyed this book very much but it was a little boring. The characters and their story are cute but could have been great if there was more emotion involved.

Re-Read: Vengeance of a Mafia Queen – This book is all kinds of perfect. If you like mafia, badass FMCs, tragic pasts or enemies to lovers, this one is a must-read. Even if you don’t, I’d still recommend it because the characters are amazing and the story is so well-crafted, it should have wide appeal.

Round 3

Burn: The Stopover – This book is terminally bland. Boring, cliche, blah. It wasn’t awful, but it sure wasn’t good. It’s beyond revision so I’d just throw out the whole thing and start over.

Re-Write: Southern Playboy – I loved the characters initially but as the story went on, the FMC became impossible to like. It was disappointing because I had high hopes for it and the book started strong. If the FMC continued to be likable throughout, this would be a five-star read so I’d improve her character.

Re-Read: Ripple Effect – This is an amazingly powerful story and I loved every second of it. I wouldn’t change a thing. If you haven’t read this book, I highly recommend it. I can’t say much about the story without being a spoiler so I’ll just say you’ll be surprised and shocked and horrified as the story goes on, but every page is riveting and the ending is super satisfying.

I really enjoyed this little exercise and look forward to doing it again soon. If anyone out there likes to play, please post a link in the comments, I’d love to read yours.
