Review: Dark Horse by Maggie Rawdon

Grant Stockton is the devil incarnate. The cowboy turned casino-owning crime boss has been the bane of my existence for as long as I can remember—first as my older brother’s best friend, then as my guardian when my brother died at his side, and now as the rival bar owner and landlord running me into the red.

He might be the head of The Quiet Horsemen, the man everyone else in this town fears, but I’m not about to cede a single inch of ground to him.

If I have to lie, cheat, and steal to keep him from finding out my bar’s underwater—well, that’s exactly what I’ll do.
At least until he breaks into my apartment and discovers my secret. One that gives him all the leverage he needs to control my fate.

My only reprieve is that The Horsemen are in the middle of a war, one that’s been spilling blood for the better part of a decade, and his enemies are closing in on our small mountain town.

Which is why I’m taken off guard by the demand he makes in exchange for keeping my secret.

Apparently there are benefits to being at the mercy of the devil…

These characters and their story will live rent-free in my head until we get Levi’s book, maybe longer. I was absolutely obsessed with Dakota and Grant’s story, like could not put it down it was just so good. Dark Western is a new genre for me but I was clearly missing out and now thank my lucking stars that I found The Quiet Horsemen. A cowboy crime boss was exactly what I need and Grant will forever define the role. It’s early but I know this will be on my favorite books of the year list because it’s just that good. Dakota is everything you want in a FMC: smart, witty, tough and strong. She’s independent, knows what she wants, and she knows how to get it.

Grant Stockton is the devil incarnate in her world: her unwilling guardian after her brother’s death, the demanding landlord who never cuts her a break but more than anything else, he’s the dark force in her life that she hates to love. Dakota is everything that Grant has ever wanted but his world is too dangerous for her, and she deserves so much more. He manages to stay in her life on the fringes, fighting with her as needed since it’s better than nothing at all.

I didn’t think the other Stockton brothers could possibly be better than Ramsey, but Grant was a clear favorite early on. He’s the tortured man at the helm of a dark empire, one who will do anything to protect the people he loves, even if that means staying far away from the one woman he wants more than anything else in this world. Dakota was full of surprises too, with her filthy mouth and quiet strength, I loved everything about these two. The suspense elements were on point, every bit as good as the romance, and took their story to another level. I can’t wait for more in this series. I’d like to thank the author and Wordsmith Publicity for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
