Review: Speak of the Devil by SL Scott

It was always you, babe.

The hottest rock star in the world walking into my work wasn’t on my bingo card. Speak of the devil . . .

My soon-to-be ex-husband.

Shane Faris is taller than I remember. Scruffier. More attractive than ever and sporting a sinful smirk that tells me he hears “Yes” too much. Figures.

He offers me the divorce I want, but on one condition . . .

A weekend together, for old times’ sake.

He’s partied his way through time zones, collecting ink on his skin to commemorate events I wasn’t a part of. While I struggled to earn my degrees, Shane chased fame and made memories without me.

It’s time to move on.

So why does his presence cause my heart to kick up a beat and my cheeks to blush when he sends me a wink? I can’t resist him. And he is my husband, after all, if only for a few more days.

When that weekend becomes two lines on a pregnancy test, we must decide whether this is a second chance worth taking together.

Cate is a nurse practitioner living her best life and about to close on the home of her dreams when her lender drops a bomb: they need her husband’s financials. This is a huge problem because Cate is single and has never been married. She doesn’t understand how this could happen and heads right to the county clerk’s office to clear up the error, but they can’t help her without her husband, so she has to reach him first. She’s surprised to learn her husband is Shane Faris, a high school classmate with whom she shared one hot kiss. Cate has no idea how they ended up ‘married’ in the government’s records and isn’t sure when she’ll hear from him since hubby’s a major rock star. Shane receives some garbled messages courtesy of the careless receptionist at the record label, so he has no idea that Cate is his wife.

He liked Cate back in high school though and can only assume this is a booty call, since he’s rich, famous and hella popular with the ladies. Cate’s happy to see him because time is of the essence, and she can’t lose the house, but they clash when she realizes why he’s there and makes it clear she did not call to sleep with him. Not that she wouldn’t love to but she’s not going to do that, and his massive ego doesn’t need the additional boost, so she’s never going to admit it to Shane.

I loved these characters from the first page. Cate is so real and down-to-earth despite being caught in this crazy situation. Shane is irresistible but she’s determined to resist because the last thing she needs right now is a celebrity fling. But as they work together to get un-married, the attraction grows. Shane can’t believe he’s so drawn to Cate because he just isn’t that kind of guy. He has hook-ups, not relationships, so why is he hooked on spending time with this woman?

Neither of them gets to come to terms with their feelings before they get another curve ball that will change both of their lives forever. I loved the ups and downs of their relationship and the push/pull of their attraction, even as they both fought hard not to feel things for each other. This is an amazing story and I couldn’t put it down, plus there’s a great supporting cast that gives us a peek into the lives of characters from other books in this world, which I always love. Can’t recommend it enough.

I’d like to thank the author and Candi Kane PR for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
