He’s the GOAT of the NFL. She’s a hot-headed reporter who despises him. They’re in the same small town for the summer. What could possibly go wrong?
I’m more than aware of the responsibilities that come with being a quarterback in the NFL.
The upside—I get to do what I love every day, which is play football.
And I make more money than I know what to do with.
The downside—everyone wants a piece of me, and the press stalks me ruthlessly.
And one reporter in particular, Brinkley Reynolds, has crossed a line.
She takes things too far.
So yeah, I have her escorted out of the press conference.
Imagine my surprise when the same woman walks into the coffee shop in the small town where I’ve gone to get some privacy for the summer.
I accuse her of stalking me.
She calls me every name in the book before proceeding to make me feel very unwelcome in Cottonwood Cove.
Her hometown.
The place where she tucked tail and ran after I’d unknowingly gotten her fired.
So now I’m enemy number one.
That’s fine with me.
I’m not the biggest fan of her either.
She’s equal parts stubborn and aggravating.
But she happens to be the sexiest woman I’ve ever laid eyes on.
So I try to make amends.
I’m not the devil after all.
But she won’t give me the time of day unless I agree to give her my story.
One I’ve fought hard to protect since the day I started playing professional ball.
I don’t owe Brinkley Reynolds anything.
So why am I considering giving her everything?
This is a really fun enemies to lovers that started with a bang and it just got better from there. Brinkley’s a reporter who got fired when Lincoln, an NFL quarterback, complained about her at a press conference. She now hates his guts, although he didn’t mean to get her fired, he just wanted to go to the bathroom without reporters following him to the urinal. In all fairness, she kind of deserved it but I still felt her pain. She returned home to the small town of Cottonwood Cove to regroup when Lincoln had the nerve to appear. It turns out his agent has a vacation home there and Lincoln will be spending some quiet time there, of all places.
They don’t get off to a great start but Lincoln feels bad and gets her former employer to offer Brinkley her job back, although she refuses because the guy was super sleazy and she’s over it. She ends up shadowing Lincoln so she can be the one to break his big story, the story the world is waiting for, and in the process, they become friends, which turns into more. Hanging out with Lincoln really opens her eyes to what it’s like living under constant media scrutiny and Brinkley has a new understanding of how the media affects people’s lives, as well as a new appreciation for the athletes she’s reporting on now.
I loved these characters and the way they came together so their story was a great read. The Reynolds kids group texts are always great and the whole family was relieved that she was no longer demanding everyone hate Lincoln. They tried for quite a while because they wanted to support her but it’s hard to hate the GOAT. I’m on a big enemies to lovers kick right now and this story was just what I needed.
