Review: Sweetly Unhinged by Kira Cole

Violet
I sent an anonymous email to The Ghost—a hacker who destroys scumbags for fun—detailing my darkest fantasy.
He replied.
With a phone number.
Now he’s texting me, saying he can make it real. That he’s watching me. That he knows exactly what I need.
I should run.
Instead, I’m saying yes.
The question driving me Who is he?
The question that’s going to ruin Do I really want to find out?

CADE
Violet Carter is my brother’s ex-girlfriend.
She’s also the girl who just sent me the filthiest email of my life.
She thinks she’s texting a dangerous stranger. I’m the guy who brings her coffee and fixes her laptop—and the man planning to fulfill every twisted fantasy she’s ever had.
The closer we get, the deeper I fall.
But when she discovers who’s been pulling her strings?
She’s either going to kill me or kiss me.
Honestly, I’m hoping for both.

Sweetly Unhinged is Book 1 of the Devoted in the Darkness duet, featuring a golden-retriever hacker, forbidden tension, and dangerously sweet obsession. Their story continues in Beautifully Ruined.

Warning: This book ends on an absolutely excruciating cliffhanger. But the good news is that second book, Beautifully Ruined, is already available (review coming soon!). The author is new to me so I wasn’t sure what to expect but I loved everything about these characters and their story. Violet finally dumps her loser ex who leeches off of his brother and pays her no attention at all. Now her only problem is her skeevy, master of sexual harassment boss, a popular politician with no shame and no scruples. She’s determined to stand up for herself but must do so carefully, since he could ruin her career before it even starts if he fires her from this internship. Her bestie encourages her to send a naughty email to The Ghost, the infamous hacker they both follow, but she was not prepared for him to respond.

The Ghost is more than happy to help her explore the dark desires she’s tired of ignoring but things get complicated when she starts to develop feelings for Cade, her ex’s older brother. He’s the complete opposite of Jack: Cade is smarter, sweeter, far more considerate and exponentially hotter, but Violet tells herself it’s wrong. Cade is definitely attracted to Violet too, but things are complicated.

Cade becomes her protector, helping her navigate her toxic workplace and awful boss, but she finds herself torn between this sweet, kind, man IRL and The Ghost, her online fantasy come to life. This book is long at over 500 pages but I was there for every minute and picked up the second book as soon as it was available. Can’t wait to see how the story ends for all three. It’s dark and spicy but also sweet and funny and I couldn’t put it down. I got Hard Code vibes from this one, which is an old favorite, so that made me like these characters even more. This was my first book by the author but certainly won’t be the last. I’d like to thank the author and Literally Yours PR for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
