Review: Best Frenemies by Max Monroe

Going tit for tat with the man you hate is all fun and games until things get literal…and the jerk sees you naked.

My beach getaway was only supposed to include three things: relaxation, wine, and fun in the sun.

Mack Houston, on the other hand, should have never—ever—been involved.

In no uncertain terms, he’s the bane of my existence.
The thorn in my side.
The sexy Mr. Good-Time Guy who drives me up the wall and my work archnemesis for the past five years.

He’s the last person I want to get stuck anywhere with—it’s bad enough that I have to see him every day at work—and yet, because of a booking error (or curse of the universe, as I like to call it), I’m stuck in the same vacation rental with him for an entire week.

I’m going to end up in jail.

Or worse, I might just give in to the insane urge to find out if his lips are really as kissable as they look.

One way or the other, disaster feels imminent.

Katy is a sweet elementary school math teacher living a mostly-charmed life but for a sole scourge: Mack Houston. The hot music teacher charms the pants off of everyone he meets, but he’s a horrible disruption. His classes are always totally out of control and often distract her students from their math work, especially during quizzes. Somehow, she’s the only person who can see this problem since everyone else just loves Mack. But Katy’s immune since she doesn’t find him remotely attractive.

At least not personality-wise. Of course, the big jerk is gorgeous to look at but she’s not the least bit interested because he’s THE WORST. One fateful morning, she’s disappointed to learn they’re expected to work together to organize a career day for the students but Katy’s so excited for spring break that she’s not going to think about work or Mack until her vacation is over. It’s disappointing when her BFF gets the flu and has to back out of the trip, but Katy’s determined to enjoy herself as she settles in at the beach.

The first twenty minutes or so go smoothly, until someone walks in on her in the shower. Katy fears the worst but when she realizes it’s Mack, her fear gives way to rage. This condo is double-booked and they can’t both stay. Sure they can, Mack reasons, but Katy disagrees. When the booking site comps them both without requiring them to leave, they agree it would be silly to waste a free Florida vacation so they’ll both stay. Katy intends to do her own thing and avoid Mack but her plan goes out the window the very first day, when they’re forced together in ways she’d never imagined.

This is such a fun and funny story on every level. The characters are instantly likeable and the banter between them is amazing. Nobody does romantic comedy quite like Max Monroe and this is some of their best. This is a standalone that ties in with Accidental Attachment and gives us cameos of some of our favorite fluffing characters and I loved everything about it. This story was everything I wanted with a perfect balance of humor and heat. I’d like to thank the authors for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
