We knew it wasn’t going to be easy.
That our love could start a war.
That my family might not accept the idea of us.
But we never even got the chance to find out…
Because everything’s been ripped away from me.
And all I’m left with is the memory of his touch and secrets that are threatening to break me from the inside out.
Everyone tries keep me together as my entire world falls apart.
But it’s never going to be enough.
Nothing ever will be. Without him.
All I can do is hold onto the shattered pieces and try to find a way to make my damaged heart beat again.
I finally get what I always wanted— a chance to decide my own future. But I didn’t know this legacy would cost me everything.
I would give it all back, to be in his arms again…
This is one of those stories that stuns you with the depth of the emotion it evokes. The entire series is like that, but Cali’s story is both heartbreaking and uplifting in so many ways. She’s been through so much already and things keep getting worse. She’s spent her whole life sheltered and treated like she’s fragile, plus her mother’s an absolute nightmare. She’d never been taught to defend herself like the other women, but made it known that it was necessary so her father and brother had started teaching her.
And while I’ll never cease to be amazed by the badasses that are Stella and Emmie, Cali is every bit as impressive even without the combat skills and weaponry handling abilities. She keeps calm in frantic situations and keeps secrets tighter than Fort Knox. Cali is a force to be reckoned with and there’s only one man for her.
The cliffhanger at the end of the last book was killing me so I will admit that when I got my hands on this book, I went right to the epilogue. I wanted to have some idea of how dark it was going to remain or what kind of redemption we’d see. That’s risky as hell because if the characters don’t have enough depth or the story isn’t truly compelling, knowing the ending can be enough to rate a DNF. Of course, that wasn’t a concern here because I know these characters and this series and can’t imagine a book in it that wouldn’t captivate my full attention from beginning to end.
There is heartbreak and things aren’t easy. Her biggest problems aren’t even really resolved at the end but Cali’s in the perfect place to move forward and has everything she needs, including her friends. I can’t wait for Nico and Brianna’s story for so many reasons, but especially because I love Bri. She has been a driving force holding Jodie together through the darkest points of her life and now supporting Cali while keeping her secrets. However, I’m not a huge Nico fan, he’s my least favorite of the guys, so I’m eager to see how I feel about him after getting to know him better. I’d also love to see Ant get his own story and can only hope it happens eventually. This is another must-read from an author who never fails to impress. I received an ARC from Candi Kane PR in exchange for an honest review.
