Review: Heartbreaker Handoff by Lex Martin

Billy’s not my baby daddy, but he doesn’t mind pretending to be…

I’m a Division 1 cheerleader with hopes of becoming a sports broadcaster. None of my plans for college include getting knocked up by a cheating ex who just got engaged to another girl.

When my father finds out I’m pregnant, he goes ballistic. That’s when my BFF, bad boy Billy Babcock, comes to my rescue and agrees to “take responsibility.”

Billy and I solidify our contract on a napkin—he’ll pretend to be my baby’s father, and I’ll help him clean up his image. The only problem is my father, the football coach, hates Billy. He warned me off dating players a long time ago, and he thinks Billy’s the biggest player out there.

Now that we’re in a “relationship,” Billy thinks we should spend some quality naked time together, but I’m worried about crossing that line. Because athletic guys with big muscles, intricate tattoos, and sexy smirks are my biggest weakness, and Billy ticks off all those boxes.

Can my football player “boyfriend” walk the straight and narrow for me? Or did I just get handed off from one heartbreaker to another?

Roxy and Billy are the best of friends, which is exactly why she turned him down when he asked her out. Sure, her bestie is gorgeous but he’s the biggest player so she knows he’d break her heart. Billy isn’t interested I anything beyond a good time and that’s not worth their friendship. She went out with one of his teammates instead, despite Billy’s warning that he can’t be trusted. Ezra said all the right things and she thought they were exclusive, but she soon found out it was all a lie. She dumped that cheating prick without a second thought, only to discover she was pregnant as she tried to move on.

Ezra is the star quarterback and her dad is the coach, so Roxy knows he’ll be terribly disappointed. It’s bad enough that she’s forced to quit cheer, which means losing her scholarship, but her dad will be shocked to learn Ezra is a lying deadbeat who knocked up his daughter and abandoned her. That kind of bad blood between them could cost the team this year’s championship, so Roxy plans to keep the father’s identity under wraps for now. But when her dad asks her if she even knows who the father is, Billy takes responsibility and says they’re together, kicking off a fake relationship that puts his spot on the team in jeopardy. Coach wasn’t Billy’s biggest fan anyway so this new development has really put them on the outs.

Roxy is grateful for his sacrifice and support but she’s worried what this will do to Billy’s draft chances. The team hasn’t been kind to him, first recruiting him as a quarter then quickly forcing him to play wide receiver instead, before taking him off of offense completely and making him a safety. He’s excelled in all roles but changing positions hurts his draft chances and his reputation as a player off the field isn’t helping. His own father demands that he break it off with Roxy, insisting he’s throwing his NFL future away if they stay together.

They’re college kids struggling to balance school and sports, drowning in family drama and about to have a baby, so life isn’t easy. The last thing they need is another complication, but they’re forced to admit that this fake relationship isn’t fake at all. I loved these characters so much. Roxy is scared at the new direction her life has taken but she’s determined to do it all. She’s going to finish her degree with a newborn in her arms and nothing is going to stop her. Billy is sweet and beyond adorable with both Roxy and the baby. Their lives aren’t easy but I won’t go into detail since it would give away too much. I’ll just say that I really enjoyed their story and highly recommend it. I would like to thank the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

  1. Great synopsis of a fantastic book. This whole series is great, but Billy and Roxy are the best!
