Review: The Wallflower by JL Beck

She needs me, because she needs money.

I don’t need her. Just her complete submission…

Maybell Jacobs is the Wallflower, quiet, shy, socially awkward and hell-bent on hiding even from herself, that is until a chance encounter takes place between us. Instantly she hates me and for good reason. I’m a walking-red-flag. Filthy rich jock, short tempered, and violent. I can have anyone and anything I want.. except her.

Little does she know her disgust, anger, and hate for me fuels my obsession to own her, completely in every single way.

Maybell resists, predictably… but her fight only makes her more desirable and I have plans that will lead her right into my lap and never want to leave.

When she joins the sinful tradition put on by the elite of the town, the Hunt, I’m shocked. The pretty little thing has no idea how much danger she’s in if she decides to become my prey.

Sweet, innocent, and fragile like a flower. I’ll have to be careful or risk breaking her.

Because I’m the ultimate predator and when I play there are no rules.

I don’t chase. I capture.

And I like to own my bait.

This one starts out pretty dark so you can’t help but wonder if Drew is redeemable. Maybel is sweet, innocent and going through life with a very low profile, until the school golden boy sets his eyes on her. He’s immediately smitten and wants no one else, but he’s not ready to admit it, not even to himself. Drew is the leader of a mysterious secret society and Bel isn’t sure what that means exactly. All she knows is that she was coerced into a game and Drew is never going to let her win. His cocky, entitled attitude make him less than desirable but his physical perfection can’t be ignored. They get off to a rough start but as they get to know one another, she gets glimpses of the real Drew occasionally, through the chinks in his armor. Bel knows his life is dark, but she has no idea how bad it is, and he’s determined to keep it that way. Drew is a real psycho, but he lives inside a nightmare, completely controlled by his father, a truly awful man.

Much of Drew’s life has been painful and cruel, suffering at the hands of his father. I already had so many questions when this book ended on a painful cliffhanger, so I’m waiting impatiently for the conclusion. I’m not entirely clear on the secret society aspects of his life or how it affects their lives, but it’s certainly not in Drew’s best interests to be involved, although he hardly has a choice. Bel is his opposite in every way, the light to his darkness, the yin to his yang, balancing out the things he hates about himself. She’s all goodness and love, in every way. Her life has been difficult too, growing up with a struggling single mom who’s not in the best of health. Bel will do anything for her mother, but sheer determination isn’t enough and she’s desperate.

This story is not for the faint of heart but if you can handle it, you will love it. I’d like to thank the author and Candi Kane PR for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
