Book Review: Wicked Girl by Piper Lawson

Wicked series book 3

He was a legend, until he walked away.
I was nobody, until I was dragged into the light.

I was never supposed to be part of Wicked, but it was always part of me.
Now it’s my turn to do something that matters.
Even if the man I love hates me for it.

WICKED GIRL is the final instalment in the new adult rock star trilogy WICKED! Jax and Haley’s story begins in Good Girl, continues in Bad Girl, and concludes in Wicked Girl.

The story picks up two years after the ending of Bad Girl, with Haley and Jax no longer together. I hated the way the last one ended and while they ultimately get their HEA, I think two years was too long. Maybe it makes sense because of the age gap and the different worlds they live in, but I still wish it were shorter. That said, I love how this one unfolded and loved the ending, too.

Things are very different now for both of them. Haley never finished school and chose to focus on Wicked Records after inheriting the company from her long-lost father. She’s stepped back from the day-to-day management but is still part owner and spends most of her time nurturing the pet project Cross ran for high school students. Jax is retired and now has full custody of Annie so he wants nothing more out of life. Wicked is having financial problems and the best way to guarantee a big success is to get Riot Act out of retirement to record some new material. The rest of the band is dying to do it but Jax is adamantly opposed.

Haley uses the one piece of leverage that she has when the label tells Jax they’ll record the love song he gave her years ago, with or without him. He brings Annie to Philly and gets into the studio but he’s not at all inspired and has a huge chip on his shoulder about everything: being dragged out of retirement, Haley choosing Wicked over him and Cross still controlling his life from the grave. It doesn’t take long for them to realize that nothing has changed. They love each other as much as ever, but still see no way to make things work, until they do.

There were some indications this could be a happily for now or an ending where they ultimately go their separate ways (the worst!) but that wasn’t the case. The ending was perfect and the final novella, Wicked Forever, was a beautiful epilogue to this story. I really like these characters and enjoyed their story so I’ll definitely read it again and will also check out some of the author’s other work.
