Book Review

Review: The Penalty by Andi Jaxon + JR Gray

I’ve been kept away from my destiny as long as I’ve been alive.

I’m the bastard, banished from Manhattan, and forbidden from my dream of playing college hockey for the Gods because no one can find out about me.

But now Dad’s dead and guess who’s in the will? So my dream of playing for the Gods can finally come true, but I have to find my place in my half brother’s shadow while dealing with my rival Teddy, who’s been a thorn in my side since juniors.

He’s cocky, infuriating, and the biggest himbo I’ve ever met.

Half the time I think he hates me.

But it all comes out after a drunken night and now I can’t get him out of my head.

Exile is over, and I’m here to make their lives a living hell.

This book was so much fun to read. Rhys and Teddy are complete opposites, yet also perfect for each other in every way. Rhys is a college hockey player who recently inherited a trust and part of a company from his absentee father, the one who cheated on his wife with Rhys’ mother and made sure he never got to meet his brothers. But dear old dad decides to do something right, finally, so he splits the inheritance equally amongst his children, so Rhys gets financial security for the first time in his life, and he starts to forge a relationship with his brothers.

Teddy is his best friend’s older brother so he couldn’t be more off-limits, but Rhys has wanted him for a very long time. They play for rival teams so they’re enemies on the ice but off of it, they can’t fight the attraction any longer. Rhys is the more serious, more driven of the two, but he knows how to have fun and isn’t as somber as he first seemed. I really adored Rhys and enjoyed watching this lonely only child get to know the siblings he’d wondered about his whole life. He was especially adorable with Teddy though and I couldn’t get enough of these two. I loved Teddy too, he was silly and funny and lovably naïve in so many ways, he was endless entertainment. I really enjoyed Rhys and Teddy’s story. It was my first book by the authors but certainly won’t be the last. I’d like to thank the authors and Literally Yours PR for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
