First Line Friday: Wrath by Eva Charles

This tag is hosted by Reading Is My Superpower.

Today’s book is Wrath by Eva Charles.

My phone beeps, and without wasting a single second, I connect the call through satellite Wi-Fi and snarl, “It’s about fucking time.”

“What the hell are you up to, Huntsman?” Will Clarke roars back.

“Have you heard anything from Lexie or the plane in the past ten minutes?”

“None of your goddamn business.”

Like hell it’s not. “Francesca Russo was murdered along with a seasoned guard less than a mile from home.”

Will draws a sharp breath. “Is that so?” In a beat, his tone shifts from outraged daddy to ruthless crime lord. “And you know this how?”

“The prime minister’s assistant contacted me.”

He pauses for what feels like an eternity, the silence screeching loud enough to make my blood curdle.

“The flight attendant who was scheduled to be on Lexie’s flight is dead. Her credentials were used by another woman to board the plane,” he says, finally.

My heart drops into my stomach. Will’s voice is icy and tightly controlled, without a hint of the emotion one would expect from a father under these circumstances. Although I have no doubt his pulse is hammering as hard as mine.

“Have you identified the impostor?”

“We’re on it.”

“We’re on it”? That’s all you’re going to give me? I don’t think so.

About: This is the conclusion to A Sinful Empire duet. The first, Pride, is an excellent read but ended on a painful cliffhanger so we’ve been waiting for answers. It picks up exactly where Pride left off in the middle of the action and pulled me into the story from the first page.

I should have seen it coming.
But I was too busy drowning in her essence.
Enjoying every lush curve.
Hanging onto each duplicitous word that tumbled from her sultry lips.

Even now, with the cards on the table and the secrets exposed, I crave her.
Every traitorous inch of her delectable body.
She’s mine.
She’s always been mine, and I don’t care if she’s my ruin.

Forbidden fruit has never been sweeter…

The series is complete! Pride and Wrath, A Sinful Empire Duet, can be read without reading Greed, Lust, and Envy.
