Review: Survival Instinct by Fiona Quinn

Survival Instinct - Fiona Quinn
Survival Instinct by Fiona Quinn

All Major Dani Addams wanted when she started up that trail was to mourn and honor her fallen friend. She has no way of knowing the weather is about to turn on her in the worst possible way—or that she’s about to meet a man who will change her entire life.

Ex-SEAL Trip Williams and his K9 Valor were brought in to rescue a film crew that got caught in the storm. He isn’t expecting Dani. But once he finds her, he will keep her safe…even if he has to disobey direct orders and fight Mother Nature herself.

All Dani and Trip have to do to get to happily ever after is weather the storm. Should be simple, right? If only…

Survival Instinct is the newest series in the Iniquus World. This novel can be read as a stand-alone, part of the series, or part of the Iniquus World.

This was my first book by Fiona Quinn and for the love of Neptune, I had no idea what I was missing. Quinn made it to my favorites list after just one book because it was that good. Everyone knows I’m a sucker for a good series so I’m going to jump on Cerebrus Tactical K9 book 2 super fast but I’m disappointed to move on because I loved these characters and want more Dani, Trip and Valor.

This is an emotional story before the characters even meet. Quinn does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and making you feel for them. Trip and Valor are on a routine training mission that takes a dark turn so I’m already invested. The action starts immediately and I want to know what happens next.

Army Major Dani Addams is on leave to attend the memorial of a dear friend and sets out on a lovely day for a hike to honor her lost pal. There’s no indication of bad weather and cell service is limited in the remote location so Dani’s unprepared for the raging disaster that will wreak havoc in just hours.

Her first encounter with Trip and Valor left me wanting more. The two were drawn to one another, but Dani’s in mourning so she’s determined not to act on that attraction, even though Trip’s super hot and clearly interested in her.

This isn’t a typical will they/won’t they story because the characters are battling forces of nature for their lives. The technical aspects of the story are very well-researched and conveyed to readers in a way that makes them clear without being boring or coming across as fluff. This is a couple you can’t help but root for with a hero dog so what’s not to love?

Their story is a real thriller and I couldn’t put it down. This is a book you’ll stay up way too late to finish because you can’t wait to see how it ends. The pacing is perfect, not at all rushed despite all the action. My only complaint is that I wanted more of the relationship but that’s just my personal preference. I would have loved another chapter between the end and the epilogue but that’s my selfishness attempting to second guess the author’s excellent work.

Heck, I would love more books about the couple beyond this and I can only hope that Quinn someday decides to give these two a series all their own. They both have cool jobs and could totally pull it off, I swear, just an FYI in case Fiona Quinn ever reads this. The book is fantastic and I’d give it ten stars if possible.
